Cancer Care Debt Relief Program

You Focus on Healing. We’ll help with the Finances.

A cancer diagnosis brings enough uncertainty, fatigue, and emotional weight. Financial pressure should not add to an already trying and arduous journey.

At Holy Family Memorial Credit Union (HFMCU), our Cancer Care Debt Relief Program is designed to ease financial strain during treatment and recovery. It offers guided, structured, potential relief under clear guidelines, so members can concentrate on their health, their families, and the road ahead.

Our Commitment

This program is built on four principles:

  1. Stability during treatment and recovery
  2. Prevention of avoidable delinquency
  3. A structured pathway back to repayment
  4. Responsible for stewardship of the credit union’s resources

We provide relief compassionately, and administer it carefully, so we can continue serving members in need for years to come.

Who May Qualify

To ensure the program is sustainable and fair, eligibility includes:

  • Membership with HFMCU for at least one year
  • Loan open for at least six months
  • Verification of active cancer treatment or recovery status
  • Demonstrated cancer-related financial hardship (e.g., reduced income, treatment expenses, medical travel costs)

Each situation is reviewed individually and confidentially.

Eligible members may receive but not limited to:

  • 0% interest
  • $0 payments for up to six months
  • No fees
  • Possible renewal for an additional six months if treatment continues or was recently completed
  • Maximum standard modification period of 12 months

Additional extensions may be considered by the President with Board approval.

Ongoing Support, Not Just a Payment Pause

Financial relief is only part of the program. Every participant works with a trained Cancer Care Agent (CCA) and a certified financial counselor.

Support requires:

  • Personal intake and eligibility review
  • Budget and cash-flow planning
  • Follow-up counseling at least every three months during the relief period
  • A structured transition plan back to regular repayment

During the relief period, members agree not to incur additional debt without consultation, ensuring the program truly stabilizes—not compounds—financial strain.

Responsible Program Oversight

HFMCU maintains strict monitoring and reporting standards, including:

  • Tracking all modified loans
  • Required documentation and compliance review
  • Maintain a total program cap of all outstanding program loan balances
  • Annual compliance review for fair lending and regulatory oversight

This careful governance ensures the program remains sustainable and equitable for all members.

You Are Not Alone

Cancer affects more than the body—it impacts families, income, routines, and peace of mind. The Cancer Care Debt Relief Program exists because we believe financial institutions can do more than lend money. We can stand beside members in their most difficult seasons.

If you or a loved one is facing cancer and experiencing financial hardship, we invite you to speak with us. Conversations are confidential, respectful, and centered on understanding your situation with care.

At Holy Family Memorial Credit Union, we cannot fight cancer for you—but we can help remove one of its burdens.
